So I just adopted 3 fuzzbutts last saturday and Stewie like to nibble on toes only if you are wearing socks and Binx is AD right now , but he likes to play tug of war for 3 mins. Sativa Is soppose to be 6 maybe 7 and all she does is eat and sleep, she comes out of her cage just to walk around the room and find another place to sleep. Due to there ages I don't think they are going to be playful. But yet I just got them last Saturday so they are not fully adjusted to their new homes Smile Any opinions on how to open them up a little more, besides all the loves tey get from us all day.

I would try lots of toys. By toys don't buy anything until you learn what interests them. A rubber sink stopper from a tub or sink, a pile of laundry for them to explore. Just don't let them have things like sponges or small rubber objects like rubber bands. Flip them and tickle their tummies. They're just in a strange new setting and you need to spend time with them.

Most ferrets like riding on shoulders or even atop a head. If they are up to date on vaccinations you might take them outdoors to play. Either use a leash and harness or keep them in open areas where you can catch them. You don't want them going under the house or into a drain where you can't follow.

I've had them two weeks now and still nothing, I have tried everything to new toys, to an open house for them to run in, riding on a blanket, I've literally done it all, except take them outside that isn't possible for me to do in this state Wink

Considering Sativa's age, it could just be that she prefers cozy sleeping spots more than being out to play. Our oldest, Loki, turned 7 this February and she would much rather be in her sleeping bag snoozing than playing and she lets it be well known to the other ferrets to leave her alone.

It could also be that it's just taking them some time to really get adjusted. Older ferrets can sometimes have a more difficult time adjusting to new surroundings.

Also, do you know much about their previous home? If they aren't used to time out to play, they may just not know how to play. I've seen ferrets that have come from homes where they were caged 100% of the time that just don't understand play. In these cases, you just need to be patient and keep trying, just don't over do it as it may just stress them out.

A few more toy ideas:

•Paper Bags
•Plastic Bags (with supervision) - We suggest cutting the handles to avoid a ferret getting caught up in them, but still supervise play as plastic bags CAN be dangerous.
•Dig Box - Most ferrets just LOVE to dig. You could get something like this: http://www.ferretstore.com/fersafdigbox.html Or you could make your own simply by adding your own favorite digging material to a cardboard box. A few ferret safe digging materials are bio-degradable starch peanuts, shredded paper, uncooked long grain rice (no instant rice as it may swell and cause an intestinal blockage), playground sand, soil (something like filtered top soil as the fertilizers in potting soil could cause irritation to the skin or illness if ingested).

I hope you'll find something here that will be useful. And don't worry if they don't know what to think about the toys at first. Give them time to adjust and be patient and I'm sure they'll come around.

Please let us know how the kids are coming along! We'd love to hear about what progress they've made.
