| Ok I will be the first to post on Adrenal Disease..... My fuzzie is 4 yr's old and he is losing hair on his rump. Now I just adopted him and They told me that is what it is caused from AD. I called vets up here but none carry the lupron shot he must get for it. The ones that do carry it want to charge 300 to 600 bucks a shot. That's nuts, So the previous owner of my ferrets said her vet is a whole lot cheaper. She said her vet also told her when she had him that it was no need to concern that he would just lose his hair.... well.... from what I have researched so far is that it doesn't just make you lose your hair it is also deadly, 6 months to 2 years life expectancy without treating them. I am going to take my buddy in next month at a vet 3 hr's away but is much cheaper. |

| Lupron is a very expensive medicine. But in ferret sized dosing there should be plenty of doses. I am uncertain of alternate medications. Surgery to remove the adrenal gland is an option. Call around and find a competent vet. I would forget about the one saying hair loss was not of concern. I believe prednisone is used for the condition as well. |

Adrenal Disease is a very common problem in our pet fuzzies. While the hair loss itself is cosmetic, there can be other symptoms related to the disease that can be more serious.
Symptoms may include:
•Symmetrical Hair loss (Most common symptom)
•Itchiness
•Loss of Muscle Mass
•Pot-bellied Appearance
•Skin may appear "Thin", or translucent
•Aggressive behavior is sometimes seen due to the elevated hormones in their body
•In females, the vulva may become swollen; In males, an enlarged prostate is sometimes seen, which can make urination difficult or impossible. This can be a life threatening situation.
Treatment
The preferred approach to Adrenal Disease is removal of the gland by an experienced ferret surgeon. In situations where surgery is not an option, drug treatment is very useful. Lupron and Melatonin are the 2 most commonly used drugs for managing Adrenal Disease. Drug therapy for AD is lifelong.
Lupron Depot (not the 24 hour), is a time release injection, and can be fairly expensive unless you can find a vet in your area that keeps it on hand for several patients, because he can buy it in larger volumes. It's more costly when it has to be prepared elsewhere and shipped to your vet. If you need to find a ferret knowledgeable vet in your area, try this site: http://ferrethealth.org/vets/
Melatonin is another option for managing Adrenal Disease. It can be given orally or as an implant. Lupron and Melatonin can be given together as well, and some vets even recommend doing it this way so that you get the benefits of both drugs.
I hope this helps you, and if you need any more help, please don't hesitate to ask.
Best of luck to you and your fuzzy! |
